MSc in Agricultural Biotechnology

Name of the course: MSc in Agricultural Biotechnology

Name of the degree: Agricultural Biotechnologist

Goals of the education
The rapid development of molecular biological sciences requires the training of specialists who are able to transform these achievements into practically useful technologies and products in everyday agricultural and horticultural practice. They will be able to provide the required amount of quality food for the world’s growing population. In addition, the graduates will have the know-how to develop new plant products (e.g. functional foods, pharmacologically active substances). It is a full-time programme and lasts for 4 semesters. In the first two semesters students acquire theoretical knowledge (molecular biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, plant physiology and microbiology) and a thorough training in basic laboratory techniques. In the last two semesters they prepare their thesis, i.e. on individual scientific work. This is accompanied by introducing the students to the latest developments in specialized fields of applied agricultural biotechnology. MSc graduates will be able to work in agricultural research, in agricultural administrative or executive positions, or as specialists in a variety of agricultural production technologies (e.g. quality control, the seed industry, development and controlling of micropropagation and ’GMO’ technologies).

The aim of the programme is to train agricultural biotechnology engineers, who are competent in the field of biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, traditional and molecular genetics, transgenic breeding, reproduction biology and dissemination biology and familiar with the practical laboratory skills. The MSc programme will equip them with theoretical knowledge, communication and management skills which, in turn, allow them to become efficient researchers, design engineers and leaders as well as to start their PhD course.
